Week Two in New York City: Exploding Taxis, Talented Katz and Pretty People

My second week in New York City has definitely been quite an adventure. I had some delicious food (as always), attended another movie premiere and covered a W Magazine cocktail party.

Monday started off as an entirely normal day. I mean, as normal as New York City gets.

It began with some coffee and emails, followed by a few interview transcriptions and some preparations for events to come later in the week. At lunch, my coworker Julia and I decided to grab some sushi from Norikoh on E 39th St.

After filling ourselves with fresh fish and miso soup, we headed back to Fifth Avenue to make our way back to work. But as we turned the corner, we heard a large bang, followed by plumes of smoke escaping a taxi roughly 10 feet away.

At first, people were running right and left. Once we got far enough away, I took a quick video.

Thankfully, it turned out to be nothing but an accident, but I really hope that never happens when I’m in a cab.

There is not very much to say about Tuesday.

I am still getting adjusted to living in a big city, rooming with men (though they are pretty great) and coping with a virtually A.C.-less city.

On the bright side, I had a delicious black forest ham and brie sandwich from an adorable deli near Grand Central Terminal, in Midtown Manhattan.

My hump day began with an orientation that we were unable to have the week before due to logistical issues.

It was great to learn about the other publications that Penske Media Corporation (PMC) owns, both in New York City and Los Angeles, and we got to check out the view from a beautiful terrace on one of the upper floors.

After work, I took a taxi to Brooklyn to cover the launch of BAMCinemaFest 2017 with the GEMINI New York City movie premiere.

I interviewed director Aaron Katz and actress Lola Kirke, whose brilliant persona and wit totally threw me off my interview-game. It was great.

GEMINI is set for commercial release in early 2018.

My Thursday evening was amazing.

I attended W Magazine’s “Who’s Who” cocktail party to celebrate the launch of their spin off Instagram account, @whoswho, which is the magazine’s effort to highlight people they deem worth following on social media.

When I first arrived, I had an hour-long conversation with twin sisters Cipriana Quann and Tk Wonder. They were both ridiculously sweet and down to earth. Quann launched her blog, UrbanBushBabes, three years ago, and I highly suggest you check it out to read a strong black woman’s perspective on the fashion and beauty industries.

I met so many brilliant people Thursday night, and I am insanely thankful that my editors at WWD gave me the opportunity to cover the event.
